Reminder of Death Many churches used art as a form of preaching to its readers that they need salvation in order to avoid eternal damnation. The paintings used were intended to scare the Holy Spirit into its viewers. They were not at all sensitive to the fact that children might see these painting either; they were intended for all ages and all genders. One painting that shows this is Earthly Vanity and Divine Salvation by Hans Memling. This triptych, a painting broken down into three parts, contrasts earthly beauty and luxury with the prospect of death and hell. The first painting shows death, a skeleton at its grave, not knowing whether it was going to heaven or hell. The second painting shows a heavenly body that is leaving off that fruit of the land in heaven. The third and final painting shows Satan in hell with an everlasting flame beneath him burning countless bodies while they are inside the mouth of an enormous creature.
