In our society today, many images of youngsters in handcuffs and prison uniforms are becoming more common in the nightly news. As America’s interests with crime and justice have grown, so has the attention to different ways in which youth offenders are charged and sentenced. More and more of our young offenders, are being charged as adults and sentenced to adult prisons. Our debate is whether sending these young offenders away to places like this is better than the juvenile detention centers. The push toward charging juvenile delinquents as adult criminals coincided with an increase in violent crimes committed by youthful offenders. However, as policies have grown, the methods by which youth are formally treated as adults in the criminal justice system have changed. In specific research we will examine the demographic, legal, criminal, and social characteristics of those youth offenders who are sent to adult courts.
