In Act II of King Lear we witness the cumulative effect of Lear�s grief and rage. After abdicating his throne to his two daughters, Goneril and Regan, in Act I, they in turn seize on his power and use it against him, driving him through innocent denial at first, to absolute rage, and finally isolation. Act II scene 4 is where we begin to witness the increasing effect of Lear�s grief and rage. As Lear arrives at Gloucester�s castle he is still innocent enough to be puzzled by Regan�s sudden absence from home. In the midst of his puzzlement, however, he comes across Kent in the stocks.
