In the art of beauty care, a person who does cosmetology can turn hair into a work of art. A cosmetologist specializes in aesthetics, which is the study of the psychological responses to beauty and artistic experiences and also specializes in hair care. �Some cosmetologists are experts in make-up, they are able to do make-up analysis and advise customers on what products to use.� (Career Encyclopedia � 66) Cosmetologists also gain knowledge in other areas such as nail care. The earliest use of cosmetics has been traced to the ancient Egyptian, who invented a number of cosmetic, herbal, and fragrance preparations for use in their personal grooming regimens as well as in religious ceremonies and burial rites. Later in time, barbering became the basic form of cosmetology. Although men were the only gender to practice barbering, women began practicing cosmetology in the 1920�s.
