The Glass Menagerie Tennessee Williams, playwright of The Glass Menagerie, was born in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1911 and died in 1984. Tennessee’s name given at birth was Thomas Lanier Williams III. The nickname “Tennessee” was given to him in college. William’s Family had quite an extravagant legacy and was well respected until his grandfather wasted away their family fortune. His father, C.C. Williams, was a heavy drinker and worked as a traveling salesman. His mother Edwina grew up in Mississippi and had a history of panic attacks. Williams had two siblings, an older sister named Rose and a younger brother Dakin. Until the time he was seven-years-old, his family lived in Mississippi. After that, they began to move constantly. They moved sixteen times in ten years. Their family slowly fell apart, and C.C.’s drinking habits became worse. The children were taunted at school, and Rose’s mental condition deteriorated steadily until she eventually underwent a prefrontal lobotomy, an event that was extremely troubling for Tennessee.
