Many works of literature depict a character that is on a quest: Their Eyes Were Watching God is no different. Janie is on a life long journey to find love, to find her identity, and to find her voice throughout the novel. Janie is determined to find a man to marry and fall in love with. Just like any other quest, she encounters obstacles on the way and must navigate around them. Janie also struggles to find her identity, or who she really is. Janie is often silenced and told that her opinion does not matter. She is involved in a life long struggle to voice her opinion and have a say in her relationships. During the course of the novel, Janie is on a quest to find the love she longs for, the identity she struggles to gain, and the voice that she never had. Throughout her life, Janie sees the pear tree in Nanny’s yard. She sees it in bloom and always notices how beautiful it is. She wants to have a similar experience for herself.
