How Love Can Change People in Times of War
Frederic Henry is a major character in Ernest Hemingway’s novel A Farewell To Arms. Throughout the story his characters persona changes slowly from a somewhat of a hypothetical boy to a man. This change is embodied within the lines of Hemingway’s illustration of an American ambulance driver for the Italian army during World War I through quotes from his other characters and even form Frederic himself . The change is shown through a relationship he spawns with an English nurse at the front.
In the beginning Henry was lustful which is evident from his description of his leave he had taken through the country in which he visited many whorehouses but had not gone to visit a good friends family (13). He even has said himself “ how we did not do the things we wanted to”(13). Henry’s lust was also shown when he first meets Catherine and all he does is try to do things to get with her like even playing a “game”, as they put it , where they say they love each other when they’ve only known each other for a few days.
