The nature of ethics—a process of inquiry One of the most arresting aspects of pragmatism, at least as it is represented in the work of the American philosopher, John Dewey, is the fundamentally different nature of a pragmatist approach to ethics compared with more traditional approaches. Ethics is not about proving what is good or right. Rather, ethics is a way of living that enables enlightened conduct. In some ways we could say that the pragmatists revert back to classical notions of ethics as a description of the good life. However, this would be deceptive, at least in the way Dewey thinks about pragmatism and ethics, because of the way he incorporates ethics and human intelligence into the continuous discovery and reinvention of good ways to live that contrasts with the striving for eternal Aristotelian virtues. What is most distinctive about Dewey’s pragmatist approach to ethics? First, ethics is a process, or an enlightened way of living. Second, ethics grows out of our concrete every day experience; it is not a metaphysical abstraction that must be applied to our lives. ......
