The name ‘Wedgwood’ has been a household name since the 18th century and is still very well known today. Josiah Wedgwood’s work started in a small factory in Staffordshire and now has expanded all over the world, but everyone asks ‘How did Josiah Wedgwood become so successful?’ In this essay I will clarify why this ambitious potter made history.
The Wedgwood family had been potters since the 17th century. Because of this, he had the advantage of knowing how to make pottery using a potter’s wheel. Sadly, during a bad case of smallpox when he was a young child, it left his knee very weak and so he couldn’t work the foot pedal of the potter’s wheel without being left in agony. Being the clever man that he was, he used his disability to an advantage as he concentrated more on designing pottery than actually making it.
Josiah found something that the people wanted, and tried to fulfil it. He realised that good porcelain was expensive and that the lower and middle classes wanted some good porcelain that was a reasonable price. He was so dete......
