In William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, two main character roles are played by women named Ophelia and Gertrude. Ophelia is a beautiful girl whom Hamlet is in love with. Gertrude is a very shallow person who is Hamlets mother, also the Queen of Denmark. It seems as in all of Willam Shakespeare's plays, the women play roles where they get disrespected and just torn apart by men. In the play, Hamlet disrespects his mother and his lover greatly. Not to mention Claudius, Laertes, and Polonius, they follow down the same path. Ophelia's role in Hamlet is typical for Shakespeare. She did what she was told and always followed orders, rules, and other miscellaneous sayings that her father told her to do. For example "I shall obey, my lord" (I.IV.143). After taking in a large speech from her father, Polonius, that lasted a good twenty lines or so, she says so discreetly that she will obey. She doesn't put up a fight or stand up or anything.
