Snowboarding is becoming one of the fastest growing winter sports out there. There are a lot of parts to snowboarding that the average person does not see. There is also a lot of technology and history behind it as well. The first major part of snowboarding is of course snow. There are many different types of snow that can affect your way of riding dramatically. There are actually ten types of snow out there. Snow Crystals being the first one are individual, single ice crystals. These crystals are often six-fold symmetrical shapes. This type of snow is derived directly from condensing water vapor in the air, usually around a nucleus of dust or some other foreign material in the air. The next type of snow is the most commonly known and they are called snowflakes. Snowflakes are collections of snow crystals that are loosely bound together into what we call a �puff-ball�. These can grow into large sizes when the snow is especially wet and sticky. A snowflake consists of up to 100 snow crystals clumped together. Rime is a very uncommon type of snow.
