Introduction Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855), the third among the five daughters of Patrick Bronte, a Yorkshire clergyman of Irish origin, was the longest living and most prolific of the brilliant three Bronte sisters in English literature. All the daughters of the family seem to have been more or less gifted; the two¡ªCharlotte and Emily ¨C outstandingly so. In 1846, Charlotte, in collaboration with Emily and Anne Bronte, published a collection of poetry under the pen-names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton bell. The Bronte sisters had in all published seven mature novels among which four by Charlotte, namely, The Professor, not published until 1857 after her death; Jane Eyre; Shirley(1849), the only one not in autobiographical form, which is less admired; and Villette(1853), to be her maturest. Jane Eyre, in the form of fictional autobiography, published in 1847, achieved an immediate success, to be commonly considered Charlotte¡¯s masterpiece. The novel tells the story of Jane Eyre, an orphan girl, at first in the household of her unsympathetic aunt, Mrs Reed, who treats her rudely ......
