The Glass Menagerie: Escapism and The Fifth Character Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Glass Menagerie is a drama written by Tennessee Williams about the lives of a family, named the Wingfield’s. The Wingfield family members lead very depressing, unfortunate, and unhappy lives. The author uses two main themes to portray the characters in this drama. A fifth character, who is absent, but plays a vital role in the drama is one such element and escapism is another component used in the play. There are four characters that we meet in this drama. Tom Wingfield, the main character, lives with and supports his mother, Amanda and his sister, Laura. There is also a gentleman caller that we briefly meet. The fifth character is Tom and Laura’s father, who left the Wingfield home at an earlier time. Even though their absent father does not interact with the other characters, his portrait is displayed above the fireplace in the family room and we quickly realize that he plays a vital role in the lives of this family. He physically escaped from the horrible life at the Wingfield apartment when he moved to the west coast sixteen years earlier. Amanda constantly......
