BEOWULF (700-1000 A.D.) & ANGLO-SAXON’S Beowulf is a heroic poem which has only one manuscript. Beowulf is the main character who is hero which saves people from a Grendel, a monster. Thus he becomes the king of his own people and dies while defending them from the dragon. It is indeed an adventure and philosophical story. The most important values of that society were kinship, warfare, kingship or lordship, bravery, fearlessness, loyalty, strength, and honor. We can see almost all of these values in this poem. Their loyalty was for the king, not for his station. There is no clue of administration or bureaucracy to keep their station. Warfare is an undeniable part of Anglo Saxon society. It is clear in Beowulf, too. Bravery is being able to go against some odd creatures and risk your life. As they were warrior society bravery had a key role in their life. He realizes that the dragon is more powerful than he is, but he will not give up. He kills the dragon by means of Wiglaf's help, but Beowulf dies because of the wounds he has received.
