Hapsburg Family of Austria Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Hapsburg family was well known as the ruling house of Austria. Ruling from 1282 to 1918, they ruled for centuries. They conquered and lost a large mass of land over their long reign. Back and forth they fought to gain control over most of Europe. More and more Archdukes and duchesses exchanged rule over the house and changed the lives of all the citizens in their state. The rule was long and rough, but their empowerment would come to an end. Hapsburgs, in the10th century, held lands in Alsace and in NW Switzerland. Large properties in Upper Alsace, Baden, and Switzerland were inherited by his grandson Count Albert III and passed to Rudolf II and Albert IV. Count Rudolf IV’s election to king of the Germans provoked war with King Ottocar II of Bohemia. Ottocar’s defeat and death at the Marchfeld confirmed Hapsburg’s control over Austria, Carniola, and Styria. These victories marked the Hapsburgs rise of European significance. The Hapsburg lands were reunited under Maximilian I at the end of the 15th century. Albert V of Austria was married to the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor ......
