Siddhartha Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Book Report: Siddhartha In the novel Siddhartha, written by German author Herman Hesse in 1922, is the life story of an Indian man by the name of Siddhartha who leaves home in search of enlightenment. Originally the son of a prominent Brahmin and recognized and praised for his intelligence, intellect, and insight at a very young age, he eventually grows weary and decides to leave and take on a life of asceticism. He follows this path for various years with his fellow friend, Govinda, until they hear news of the Buddha coming through a nearby town; the two of them depart from their group of ascetics go to listen to the Buddha’s teachings. Govinda is convinced that the Buddha’s teachings are true, and decides to follow him, yet Siddhartha remains unconvinced. He strides forward on his path to enlightenment, and is ultimately brought to a town, where he spends many years. Ultimately, he becomes a very rich merchant entangled in a life of gambling, drinking, and greed. Disgusted with himself, he abandons this lifestyle in search of a much more simple life as a ferryman with an old ma......
