The written word has existed for thousands of years, ever since the first symbol was scratched. Countless books have been written over the ages: novels, plays, biographies etc. Most of these are written to please and engage the reader or to gain him knowledge. The author is usually not especially acknowledged; the piece of literature itself is what we read and think about. Jorge Luis Borges, Argentinian author of “Tion, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius” states that “All literature, in the end, is autobiographical.” My exploration is whether Borges’ writings reflect his inner self and his beliefs in general. I conclude that his stories do, in fact, coincide with his deeper self and are, in some respects, a working out of his inner conflicts.
Although Borges’s work is limited to the short story, the essay and poetry, he is one of the most renowned writers of the twentieth century. His work has an almost mathematical style, sometimes with a plot line and most commonly laden with big philosophical and scientific ideas.
