From Lassie to Old Yeller, dogs have always been man�s trusty, loving, loyal sidekick. In The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, the main character is a burly St. Bernard named Buck. In the novel, Buck struggles to find his relationship with man when he is forced to live in a world unknown to him. In this world, which is the wilderness, Buck must also discover who he really is; a rugged, muscular, instinctive beast. For a dog, Buck seems to understand and comprehend much more than a canine should. Which is why, in the novel, London uses Buck to represent a complex human being. Judge Miller, Buck�s original master, is a wealthy man who lives on a large estate (London 3). While living on the estate Buck enjoys a picturesque lifestyle, one that any dog would desire.
