Without the influence of the characters of Quackenbush, Brinker, and Leper, important events might not have occurred in A Separate Peace and the book would have been very different. The role of Quackenbush illuminated Finny�s request for Gene to play sports for him and Gene�s temperamental/ psychotic personality traits. Brinker Hadley is a foil to Finny, which results in him pestering Finny to find out what really happened in the accident. Leper Lepellier allows the theme about the war (World War II) to progress throughout the novel as we are carried through the stages of war via Leper. These various characters each play a vital role in the novel and without one of these characters, the novel would seem incomplete. Because Finny can never play sports again, Quackenbush is used to remind Gene of this by giving him a hard time when he applies for the position of assistant manager of the crew team. When Finny said, �Listen, pal, if I can�t play sports, you�re going to play them for me,� [Page 85] Gene felt obligated to become a part of Finny since he had caused the accident. Quackenbu......
