Michelangelo <~His Life and Times~> His Life and Times He worked from a scaffold, on his back, with paint dripping into his face and eyes, and muscle cramps in his extended arm and his back. He seldom stopped to eat, munching instead on a piece of stale bread he took to the scaffold with him. At night he worked by candlelight. He had a mattress brought up so he could sometimes sleep on the scaffold. When he did leave the scaffold it would be late at night, and even then he wore his work clothes to bed. He kept his work boots on for so long that when he finally removed them, his skin peeled off with his socks. He remarked at the time: "I strain more than any man who ever lived." No artist in history neither labored so long nor so hard for the cause of beauty as did Michelangelo. For seventy years he dedicated all his emotional and physical energy to the creation of works that glorified God and exalted the human spirit.
