Enlightenment Philosophers and the Death Penalty Since the beginning of time the death penalty has been the ultimate punishment for millions of people. It has existed in every civilization from Mesopotamia, to the ancient tribes of Africa, to the Europeans, and even the Native Americans. The Romans might be the most famous civilization to have used the death sentence; they invented a great number of ways to impose the punishment. They would make the sentence an extravagant show in the Coliseum by forcing the prisoner to fight with exotic and dangerous animals using nothing more than a spear; they would also force the prisoner into armed combat with highly trained gladiators. The Romans have also been recorded to have thrown prisoner off of cliffs onto jagged rocks waiting below. Despite the best efforts of the thousands of people that have and are, even today, opposed to it, the death penalty has continued to exist throughout the years.
