John Milton’s Paradise Lost Paradise Lost is a monumental epic poem in twelve books in which Milton expresses his own philosophical, political and religious views. Paradise Lost is about Adam and Eve from the Bible and the first pages of Genesis. Milton expands Genesis into a very long and detailed narrative poem. It also includes the story of the origin of Satan. Originally, he was called Lucifer, and angel in heaven that led his followers in a war against God, and was ultimately sent with them to hell. Thirst for revenge led him to cause mans downfall by turning into a serpent and tempting Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Paradise Lost opens in hell, in a lake of fire, where Satan and his followers have been defeated in a war they waged against God. They build a palace, called Pandemonium, out of minerals dug from the earth, where the demons meet. A demon named Morloch speaks and pleads for another war. He feels that nothing, even destruction, would be worse then Hell and therefore the demons have nothing to lose by another attack. Satan’s seco......
