I believe that the British government decided to evacuate the children from major cities such as London, Manchester and Liverpool at the start of the Second World War for many reasons but mostly for the children’s safety. During the First World War there were bombings made by Zeppelin Airships these started in January 1915 and over two thousand people were killed or injured and buildings were destroyed. By 1917 the Germans had made long range bombers called Gothas which could carry up to 500kg of bombs. Attacks were made on London causing panic and devastation; many attacks were at night as this made it harder for the bombers to be spotted. By the start of the Second World War technology had been greatly improved and the potential to take many more lives was increased. There were many predictions made by Military planners about how many deaths would be expected throughout the duration of the war, there were estimates of around 150,000 casualties per week.
