Many North Americans talk about the concept of free speech without really understanding its true meaning. We don't understand what free speech is, and its notion is used to defend individuals who, in truth, neither need nor deserve any defense. An example of this is those who defend the ignorant comments of John Rocker, the former Atlanta Braves closing pitcher. Rocker�s expresses, �The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?� Many feel that because America has free speech, Rocker is entitled to his views and has the right to say whatever he feels despite his absurd racial views and furthermore, the various negative criticisms that he directs towards opposing teams� fans.
