The dual philosophies of Parmenides and Heraclites have greatly impacted western culture. Parmenides, the more mainstream of the two philosophers, viewed history as the redemption of a fall and believed that the world was based on strict opposites. Heraclites, on the other hand, subverted Parmenidean beliefs and advocated the tragic view of the world in which everything was inherently in process and where there was a chiasmic unity of opposites. The conversation between the worldviews of the two pre-Socratic philosophers dominates Sophocles�s tragic play, Antigone. Creon represents the Parmenidean principles of opposites, while Antigone�s values threaten Creon�s beliefs of judgment and preference. By putting the separation of opposites in question, as shown in the opening conversation between Antigone and her sister and in her later conversation with Creon after her confession, Antigone ends up in an unsolvable situation and becomes emblematic of the tragic worldview.
