Character studies in Lord of the Flies The four main characters in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies possess different qualities. The qualities that were needed for the group to survive on the island, intelligence, bravery, decency and organization, are divided among the four major characters. If one character had possessed all these qualities, he could have been a leader who would have kept the group together and helped them survive being stranded on the island. Instead, each of the main characters has one of these strengths, but lacks the others. The four boys needed to combine their abilities in order to create an organized society on the island. The reason the boys’ society broke down was because they did not work together. Because Jack was hungry for power, and jealous of Ralph’s leadership, he caused the group of boys to divide into separate factions, which led to the downfall of the group. The character that shows organization in the story is Piggy. Piggy realizes the only way to keep things organized is to have order and democracy when the boys are having a meet......
