The Holocaust: Concentration and Exterimination Camps Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. From this point on, life in Europe took a horrifying turn. Hitler�s appointment of chancellor brought an end to the German democracy. Hitler promised to bring a better life to Germany. He called his political philosophy National Socialism. The official name of his party was the National Socialist German Workers� Party, or Nazi for short.# He and the Nazis appealed especially to the lower middle class, the unemployed, and the youth. Contrary to their promises, the Nazis had only racist and authoritarian ideas for their country. They robbed the people of their freedoms and wished to create a �Volk� community. The �Volk� community was to unite all of the social classes and regions of Germany under Hitler�s rule. Soon enough, the Third Reich actually became a police state.
