Plate Tectonics ISU There is no place in the world that has been shaped like Canada. Plate tectonics have impacted Canada significantly! These plate tectonics are made up of the earth�s crust and the outermost part of the earth�s mantle. The thick layer of hot rock under the crust and above the core, called the mantle, is a dense sphere at the earth's center. These certain plates which are about 60 meters, or 100 km, thick will move 4 inches (10 cm) a year (Cloos, 1998). Even in this slow process, over the last 200 000 000 years, many new land forms have been created. They have altered the physical shape of Canada by creating mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes. Due to the tremendous rocks forced together and apart, mountains were formed over long periods of time. Plate Tectonics is the outer shell of the earth that is made up of about 30 plates of different sizes (Erickson, 57). The continents and the ocean floor make up the outermost part of these plates.
