Death of a Salesman is a cheerless play about one man�s pursuit of his American Dream and the difficulties that he faced along the way. It is a play almost entirely devoid of happiness of any kind; instead, it is filled with feelings of alienation, loneliness, and failure. The only sense of happiness the characters feel is when they are hoping and scheming about plans for their future, where they may actually achieve a certain extent of satisfaction. There are fragmented recollections of better, happier times in the context of the main character�s dreams and hallucinations. These serve only to emphasize the feelings of unhappiness in his present state of affairs. Not all of Willy�s visions were happy, yet he seemed more content within his trances than in the real world. Willy was unhappy with the drab reality of his unrewarding career and with his unfulfilling home life, leaving him to sift through faded memories and empty possibilities of hope in order to find some happiness.
