Mary Shelley
July of 1816, aside from being historically significant, was probably the most important single month in literary history. Mary Shelley traveled with her stepsister Claire Clairmont and her soon to be husband Percy Shelley to stay with Lord Byron and his young physician John Polidori at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva. The group of five were driven indoors by record cold temperatures and rainfall due to the climate abnormalities which affected Northern Europe and North America (Wikipedia). Inspired by ghost stories from the book Fantasmagoriana and by hallucinations brought on by great quantities of laudanum, they decided to have a contest to see who could write the scariest story. This hallucination-driven party gave birth to two major literary tales; John Polidori’s Vampyre and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley was born August 30, 1797 in London, England to famed feminist and writer Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, an anarchaic journalist who believed in free love (Wikipedia). Her mother passed away 10 days after her birth, leaving her fath......
