Sociology is referred to as the study of society. In this study we are going to be comparing and contrasting the different sociological perspectives and explaining and evaluating quantitative and qualitative research methods. The theories in sociology can be split up into two main sections which are structural (macro) theories and social action (micro) theories. The First theory we are going to be looking at is the structural theory of Functionalism. Functionalism is an organic analogy, which means that it looks at society like an organism. For example if you think of it like a human body, although the body systems work independently, they also work together as a whole so that the body’s balance is maintained. If one part of the body breaks down, then the body would not function correctly. There are a number of institutions that functionalist believe are essential to societies equilibrium.
