The Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Great Gatsby In the novel we see that the characters of Nick and Gatsby change. This is partly due to the unreliability of the narrator, Nick, as the story is told from his point of view. However, this change is also due to the fact that the subject, Gatsby, is, for much of the novel, described in a glamorous way to sastisfy Nick's imagination, whilst we on a few occasions get the sense that he is not always what he appears to be. As a result of this, the reader has to face an at times changing perception. Meanwhile, Tom, as a member of the elite, remains a constant force without undergoing a similar shift of identity. He is there from the beginning till the end, the key figure of the novel and of society itself. Thus, through the identity of the characters, Fitzgerald presents the dual identity of America. The novel is written in the form of a personal memoir of Nick's own experiences with Gatsby in the summer of 1922. His position in relation to the other characters gives him a great advantage to be the inside character with the most open and various points of view; in ......
