Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a moral play about a man with ‘vaulting ambitions,’ and tells the story of his life – his valour, tyranny, and tragic downfall. Fitting Aristotle’s criteria of an ideal Greek tragedy, the story emphasises the many flawed judgements and consequential decisions which lead to Macbeth’s eventual defeat, and reveals the punishments he faces as a result of these decisions. This evidently illustrates the idea of an ‘even-handed justice.’ In fact, throughout the play, Shakespeare clearly distinguishes between the goodness and badness of human behaviour, giving a clear portrayal of the moral outlooks of Shakespeare’s time. Written in 1606, society was still monarchical and highly religious, thus, its audience would have seen the ending of the play as highly justified. Although many of the characters were immorally killed, the audience would still have been able to relate to the idea that the ends justifies the means, and that all is set right at the end, as ‘Bloody instructions, which being taught return/To plague the inventor’.
