Appearance vs. Reality Many people in today�s society like to appear as a likable or helpful person. When in reality they are not and eventually their true character becomes apparent. However, this appearance vs. reality usually does not result in death. As opposed to the characters Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the witches who exemplify the theme of appearance vs. reality through their actions but unlike today�s society it is fatal. The character Macbeth appears to be a loyal subject of the king when in reality, he is a murderous villain. Similarly, Lady Macbeth appears to be strong willed, however in reality she is weak. Finally, the witches also appear to be helping Macbeth when in fact they are deceiving him. Macbeth gives the impression that he is a loyal subject of the king when he fights valiantly for his king killing Duncan�s enemy�s and when he fights Macdonwald �he unseam�d him from the nave to the chaps� (1.2.24).
