The short story, “The Rockpile” was set in Harlem during the brutal Great Depression. A natural rock formation that is the centerpiece of the story was located across the street from John Grimes and his African American family. John’s half brother Roy plays on the rocks sometimes and watches as other African American boys viciously fight on the rockpile. John and Roy sit on the fire escape every Saturday and observe the cruel city they live in, Harlem. One day, Roy, the main character, is called down by his friends to join them on the rockpile. With such aspiration and anxiousness, Roy quickly decides to join the struggle of getting to the top of the rockpile. In doing so, Roy finds himself in trouble as he violently fights with other boys for the achievement to be the king of the rock formation. As Roy makes his way to the top, he is hit with a tin can and thrown to the ground with a bloody eye. The “Rockpile” examines the causes of violence and failure among black youths in Harlem during the Great Depression. The plot of this short story fits together with the kind of society......
