PLAINSONG By Kent Haruf In the book Plainsong by Kent Haruf, the story proves the phrase �no man is an island�; it shows you that whether or not you want to be, you are dependent on others. Throughout the book you see the constant theme of people realizing that you can�t always make it on your own. I see this as a major eminence of this book. The book starts out with about seven main characters; each character is facing different problems, ranging from teen pregnancy, to facing the deterioration of a marriage. The theme among these people is that if they had reached out to others, they wouldn�t have gained from a bad situation. I believe that that is a message that is trying to be established throughout the book. At the age of 17, Victoria Roubideaux became pregnant. Shortly there after she found that her mother would not accommodate a pregnant girl and kicked Victoria onto the streets. This left Victoria no other choice but to turn to others for help.
