PLAINSONG By Kent Haruf In the book Plainsong by Kent Haruf, the story proves the phrase “no man is an island”; it shows you that whether or not you want to be, you are dependent on others. Throughout the book you see the constant theme of people realizing that you can’t always make it on your own. I see this as a major eminence of this book. The book starts out with about seven main characters; each character is facing different problems, ranging from teen pregnancy, to facing the deterioration of a marriage. The theme among these people is that if they had reached out to others, they wouldn’t have gained from a bad situation. I believe that that is a message that is trying to be established throughout the book. At the age of 17, Victoria Roubideaux became pregnant. Shortly there after she found that her mother would not accommodate a pregnant girl and kicked Victoria onto the streets. This left Victoria no other choice but to turn to others for help.
