Case Study Two Of Hawaii Introduction Approximately 13% (~15 miles) of Maui�s 120-mile coastline is armoured with seawalls . Nearly 8 miles of beach loss can be linked to shoreline structures. A shoreline structure holds the shoreline in place while coastal erosion continues eventually causing beach loss, seen along Maui�s North Shore in Spreckelsville. Spreckelsville Beach in the North Shore is a wide, white sand beach east of the world famous windsurfing spot at Kanaha Beach Park. The residents along Spreckelsville have attempted to control coastal erosion from getting up onto their private property by placing rip-rap along the coastline. Most of the shoreline structures in this location, were placed along the coastline during the 1980s. Many of the existing shoreline structures are now experiencing undermining , which causes safety issues and requires repairs. Erosion/Deposition Under an emergencies only, Maui�s managers allow sand bags to be placed along the shoreline until a long-term coastal erosion plan is developed for the area.
