The Castle of Otranto: Following Fate's Lead Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
As defined by the Random House Compact Unabridged Dictionary, the word “fate” means “a prophetic declaration of what must be or that which is inevitably predetermined” (701). The characters in Horace Walpole’s Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto frequently acknowledge the presence of omens, prophecies, and portents, which are merely forewarnings of the fate of each person. The fate of each character is dictated by the extent of one or multiple prognostics pertaining to him or her. Throughout the entire novel, omens, prophecies, and portents foretell events which will soon occur and affect some of the characters in either a positive or negative way. These events change the outcome of each character’s life and are major parts of the story’s plot.
The prophecy declared in the beginning of the novel forecasts Manfred’s fate of ultimate demise. On the first page, a prophecy of unknown origin is mentioned, which states, “That the castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it” (17).
