The artists Robert Longo and Man Ray have vastly different ambitions in the presentation and purpose of their work but also have several similarities, such as the use of photography and interest in making art that was less focused on the figure and more on abstract symbols. Robert Longo's works involve the exploration of the importance of images in popular culture, and the investigation of stereotypical representation of the individual's alienation within a complex society. Central to the mood of Longo's pictures is the depiction of violent physicality and emotional anxiety motivated by an unknown source left to the viewer's speculation. Longo often used film stills or photographs as the source for inspiration. He successfully took the power of the photograph or filmic image and married it to large-scale artworks. Works by Longo are filled with deep emotions that are both primitive and at the same time self-conscious of what they are communicating.
