How appropriate is the conclusion to Wise Children? In Carter’s conclusion to the novel, a number of themes that are prominent throughout the novel are apparent. However, in some cases the treatment of those themes is not as it was in the rest of the novel. Carter ends the novel by offering the reader a rebirth and amalgamation of many of the major themes of the novel. The traditional order of patriarchy is broken down by the end of the novel. Patriarchy, and Melchior’s position at the head of the Hazard family has been challenged throughout Carter’s novel – especially at the novel’s end when Melchior is presented as an aging geriatric who realizes his mistakes. Nora and Dora end the novel “in charge of a baby carriage.” This demonstrates the theme of matriarchy and shows it to have a cyclical nature. It reminds us of the artificial family created by Grandma Chance when she adopted the twins seventy-five years ago. Carter has produced an appropriate ending to her novel by creating a new artificial family, a rebirth of matriarchal relationships. This could be how Carter sees......
