Kenneth Kirtley Ford Pinto Ethics Paper MGMT 368, Week 3 In May 1972, Lily Gray and her 13-year old neighbor Richard Grimshaw, went out for a drive in Lily�s 1972 Ford Pinto. Shortly after they departed, the Pinto stalled in the middle lane of the freeway, apparently due to carburetor malfunction. Lily�s Pinto was immediately struck by a car traveling at approximately 30 miles-per-hour. The impact of the crash resulted in the Pinto catching fire, resulting in the death of Lily Gray and left Richard Grimshaw with devastating burn injuries. Ford Motor Company was found negligent in an ensuing lawsuit and the Gray family was awarded $560,000 and Grimshaw $2.5 million in compensatory damages (ref Grimshaw vs. Ford Motor Co). In addition, Grimshaw was awarded $125 million in punitive damages (which was later reduced to $3.5 million).
