Before we can fully understand the problems with percept, we must first understand what perception can be defined as. There are two sides to the word � both of which I will be dealing with in my essay. The first meaning refers to the stimulus that we receive from our five senses � sensory perception. In this case, any of the information communicated to our minds by our sense of sight, taste, hearing, touch or smell helps us perceive � understand � an object. For example, we feel that a fire is hot, hear it crackling and see its brightness. The word �perception�, however, can have a slightly different connotation as well. It can refer to the act of inferring judgment based on prior experience or knowledge. For example, seeing an Arab on a plane and assuming it to be a terrorist � based on the information widely circulated by the media following the 9/11 disasters. In this case, the word goes beyond just examining the physical characteristics of an object. It is important to keep in mind the fact that both types of perception have problems that come with them.
