In Chapter 1, “Introduction: Landings” of Transformations of Urban and Suburban Landscapes: Perspectives from Philosophy, Geography and Architecture, Gary Backhaus and John Murungi present an introduction of how philosophy and geography are correlated. In this book, Backhaus and Murungi discuss their thesis on the interrelationship between identity and landscape. They also discuss how the transformations of landscapes are so important to understand. In this paper I will attempt to discuss the points made by these gentlemen. It was stated that “[p]laciality, or the meaningful organization of life as an environmental nexus, both affects and effects personal and collective identities as well as modal processes of social and environmental relations.” The authors of this book believe that place is important to a person’s identity and that we are constantly being shaped by our environment.
