Today in Alabama our criminal institution and correctional facilities are extremely overcrowded. Any probation or court referral officer in this state would exclaim that they are overwhelmed by their caseloads of those offenders who didn�t go to jail or have been released, but remain on probation. This is a scenario that is not limited to the state of Alabama. This is far too common and seems to be the scenario across the United States. Astonishing is the amount of those incarcerated and on probation who are alcohol and/or drug dependent. With that said, is there a link between alcohol and/or drugs and crime? Drugs (when I reference drugs by itself, I am including alcohol unless other noted) often provide intense, temporary feelings of elation or relaxation. Because of this, many people become physically and psychologically addicted to the drugs. The mind of a drug addict or alcoholic is simply that they can never seem to get enough of a good thing.
