Global Warming Global warming is the gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth�s lower atmosphere. Temperatures at the Earth�s surface increased by about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit over the twentieth century. Scientist believe that the earth is warming because of the large amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are being released into the Earth�s atmosphere. They also believe that it is because of deforestation and fossil fuel combustion. Studies have found that if temperatures keep increasing at the rate that they are now, by 2100 the Earth�s temperature will increase by at least eleven degrees Fahrenheit or more. Most scientist believe that if the temperature keeps increasing to such high temperatures polar ice caps and glaciers will melt fairly quickly causing floods and rising sea levels. The temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth�s surface gets hotter through a process called the greenhouse effect.
