Isabella Augusta Persse’s The Rising of the Moon Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Isabella Augusta Persse’s The Rising of the Moon, sets the scene of what seems to be a very simplistic, but in fact is a complex play. Persse uses three set devices to draw on the emotion of her audience, which in turn captivates the attention right from the beginning. She uses extra characters, two policemen to begin to draw out their sergeant who is struggling within himself. She uses moonlight, lighting creates atmosphere which set the opening of the play. She also uses a key prop, one barrel that starts off as a static piece and becomes a character within the play. The drama takes place on a wharf in a seaport town in Ireland. Three policemen enter the scene to post notices of fugitive, “dark hair--dark eyes, smooth face, height over five feet five” (Persse 903) the placard reads. A police sergeant, posting the signs at the local docks, believes that the fugitive will try to escape by sea. In search of places to post the placard, this scene takes place on a quay from which there is only one escape for the fugitive; his landward route having been cut off by the law leave him nowh......
