Joseph Chamberlain was born in London on July 8, 1836 into a family that was active Unitarians, and who had been radical Protestant dissenters for many generations. Chamberlain grew up to be an extremely influential statesman of his time. In his younger years, he was a Liberal with radical ideas, a successful businessman, campaigned for educational reform, and later went on to become President of the Board of Trade. Later on in his life, he formed a coalition with the Conservatives and served as Colonial Secretary, with imperialist and protectionist goals in mind. Even though Chamberlain never served as Prime Minister, many people regard him as one of the most influential British politicians of his time because of his outstanding personality, and ability to speak. Chamberlain went to school at University College School, which was a school designed to teach children of rich Unitarians, from 1850-1852, and he excelled academically.
