Feeling that has have no way to gain the identity and being largely dominated by men, the narrator in the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” is being forced into the helpless position of a dependent wife in the family. She exemplifies the circumstance that middle class women experienced, who is incapable for changing her powerless position in the marriage. The narrator, whose name readers discover at the end called Jane, is almost anonymous and is subjected to and silenced in an ideological prison by her husband, John. He dominates her no matter she is feeling fine or unwell, refuses to let her do anything but rest, and keeps her from her favorite creative writings even though Jane thinks writing could help her recover. “There is gender oppression because men want and like to dominate women and act out hostility toward them” (Johnson 91). Indeed, oppression and domination are at the core of what is happening in her family.
