Silk: Strong and beautiful 1. Introduction The word silk often conjures up images of the final product form of the fabric which is a bright-colored, shiny, soft, cloth, as seen in Figure 1. What may not be associated at first thought with silk is where it comes from in the first stages. It is produced from a naturally occurring protein found in silkworms, as seen in Figure 2. Figure 1. The larva is not really a worm at all, but in fact a caterpillar [4]. There are several species of silkworm that are used in commercial silk production; however Bombyx mori is the most common. Silkworms possess a pair of specially adapted salivary glands called sericteries, which are used for the production of a clear, gluey, proteinaceous fluid that is forced through openings called spinnerets on the mouthpart of the larva [4].
