Socrates, the Martyr for Freedom of Speech Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Over the centuries there have been many different great philosophers who have walked the earth. Some of the most recognized and most popular philosophers are Plato, Xenophon, and Aristotle. But the person that most people do not recognize is the man who taught all of these great philosophers to think they way they do. Socrates, the mentor of both Plato and Xenophon, was the greatest, most interesting, and most influential philosopher of the fifth century. Socrates believed that there was indeed a real truth out there, and by using your brain you could find it. He was able to persuade a man from his beliefs by just asking a series of questions that would make one contradict himself. This method of question is called the elenchus. During the time of Socrates there was a democratic government that held office in Athens. Ironically, however, it just so happened to be, that Socrates had an antidemocratic mindset. Because he was so influential, and he had antidemocratic ideas, the government became upset with Socrates. They put him on trial for impiety and corrupting the youth and......
